White Water Canoe Coaching

Introduction to White Water Canoe Coaching (grade 2):

Are you ready to take your flat water canoeing skills into a moving water environment?

 

Through this course, we will provide an introduction to moving water and develop your skills for the white water environment, leaving you confident to navigate rivers of up to and around Grade 2. The morning will start with a warm up on flat water, before we move into the flow to apply skills. 

 

You’ll learn key skills such as how to effectively and safely set up your canoe (known as outfitting), river reading, crossing and using the flow, boat control, and and how to develop a positive paddling mindset. 

 

You’ll get the best out of this course if you have some current flat water canoeing experience. Ideally you will know how to exit your canoe safely if it capsizes. 

What’s Included? - A full day’s coaching from a fully qualified and insured coach;  - Use of an open canoe;  - Use of white water paddles.

What’s not included?  - Transport to and from the river;  - Car parking or access fees (location dependent).

What kit do you need? - A wetsuit or drysuit, with layers to keep warm on the river;  - Shoes with a good grip, ideally old trainers or paddling trainers; - A buoyancy aid;  - A helmet.  If you would like to bring your own canoe, it must be suitable for use on white water and must have air bags or buoyancy blocks at the front and back. If you are unsure, please get in touch!  Please ensure all your equipment is suitable for a Grade 2(3) whitewater environment. If we determine that your personal protective equipment is not appropriate, we reserve the right to prevent its use. If you are unsure, please contact us before the course.

Canoe Leader Training

Moderate White Water Canoe Coaching (grade 2/3):

If you’re ready to build on your canoeing skills in a moderate water environment, this course is for you!

 

During this course, we will build on your core moving water skills, aiming to elevate them ready for you to confidently run Grade 2/3. We will start the day warming up by using those core skills on calmer flows, before running a section of river with plenty of opportunity to apply these skills and take them to the next level!

You’ll learn the key strokes necessary for a variety of different types of rapids, drops and features. You’ll learn, or put into practice, how to read the rapid, choose your line and adapt your paddling using changes in speed, direction and power to execute your chosen lines. 

You’ll get the best out of this course if you have some current moving water canoeing experience on grade 2. Ideally you will know how to exit your canoe safely if it capsizes on moving water.

Advance White Water Canoe Coaching (grade 3+):

Are you ready to take white water canoeing to the extreme?

 

Through this course, we will help you develop your skills to elevate your paddling to a Grade 3/3+ white water environment. We will kick off in a moderate flow, revisiting the key skills ready to apply them in a more dynamic environment.

 

You’ll learn to apply your white water skills in a complex environment, hitting more eddies, executing dynamic lines and understanding the importance of power, timing and (working with the water, not against it). You’ll also have the chance to practice teamwork and safety principles, and develop a positive paddling mindset (which is vital in these more challenging rivers).  

 

You’ll get the best out of this course if you currently paddle grade 3 features, and want to develop your paddling for grade 3+ rapids or more continuous grade 3 rivers. You should be confident in exiting your canoe if it capsizes, and ideally will have some experience in white water safety and/or rescue.

If you would like to bring your own canoe, it must be suitable for use on and appropriately outfitted for white water and have air bags or  buoyancy blocks at the front and back. If you are unsure, please get in touch!  Please ensure all your equipment is suitable for a Grade 3(4) whitewater environment. If we determine that your personal protective equipment is not appropriate, we reserve the right to prevent its use. If you are unsure, please contact us before the course.
